Introducing In My Own Time, a Guided Journal for Survivors of Relationship Abuse

When so much of your attention has gone toward getting through the day, it can feel unfamiliar to ask yourself what you want, what you need, or what matters to you. Sometimes a place to begin is as simple as a quiet page and a question you get to answer in your own words.

I created In My Own Time: A Guided Journal for Healing, Voice, and New Possibilities for adults of all genders affected by relationship abuse. It’s a place to reflect on what you’ve experienced, reconnect with parts of yourself you may have set aside, and consider what you want to make room for next.

What’s inside the journal

Across 144 pages and 40 guided reflections, you’ll find space to explore eight themes:

  • Safety and choice. Notice what feels manageable for you right now.

  • Making sense of harm. Reflect on patterns and how they affected you.

  • Loosening self-blame. Consider what you were carrying and what was never yours to take responsibility for.

  • Feelings and responses. Give yourself room to name what’s coming up.

  • Grief and mixed feelings. Make space for what you miss and what you’re relieved to leave behind.

  • Identity, voice, and boundaries. Reconnect with your preferences, values, and needs.

  • Support and connection. Think about the kinds of help and relationships that feel respectful to you.

  • New possibilities. Imagine what you’d like to make room for in your life.

There’s encouragement on every page, space to write, and clearly marked optional faith reflections. You can start with a topic that speaks to you, skip a prompt, or come back to a page when you feel ready. You can reflect without writing down the details of what happened.

A simple question to begin with

What is one preference I could give myself permission to notice today?

It might be the music you want to hear, how you’d like to spend a free afternoon, or something you’d like more time to think about before saying yes. Ordinary choices can be a meaningful place to practice listening to yourself.
